'Threadbare' US accusations against Iran
Iraqi President has rejected the US allegations that Tehran is arming
and financing Iraqi militias, labeling them as outdated and used-up.
"We are seeking to open a new era," Jalal Talabani said Monday,
alluding to Baghdad's efforts to use the two countries' potential to
resolve the situation in war-stricken Iraq and guarantee its security
and stability.
The Iraqi President said, "We did our best to establish a trilateral
security subcommittee with Iran and the US to stabilize Iraq," Fars
news agency reported.
"We have consulted with our brothers in Tehran and talked to US
officials in order to achieve our goal (the trilateral subcommittee)."
Iraqi officials had raised the idea of the subcommittee two months
before the second round of Iran and US talks on Iraq's security.
Talabani added that Tehran which previously refused to negotiate with
American officials did not reject Baghdad's request for talks as a
goodwill gesture to help Iraqis.
He described the formation of the committee as a "major achievement."
