Another US Chopper Downed in Iraq
BAGHDAD, July 31.— The US Army announced Tuesday that another of its
helicopters was shot down by unknown weapons fire to the east of
Baghdad and that its two crew members were rescued alive, reported EFE
news service.
According to a US military command press release, the aircraft, an
Apache AH-64, crashed after being hit by gunfire near the zone of Al
Gedida in Baghdad.
Earlier in the month, the Iraqi resistance downed an OH-58D chopper in
the south of Baghdad, wounding both crewmembers.
Meanwhile, AFP reported that a US solider died Tuesday in an operation
in the province of Al Anbar in western Iraq. The loss brought the
official US military death toll to 79 for July.
ANSA also reported that the Danish military contingent withdrew from
Iraq Tuesday, before the proposed date of August 10. The pull-out took
place amid great tension as the troops came under resistance fire.
Denmark is the 20th country to withdraw its troops from Iraq, preceded
by Nicaragua, Spain, The Dominican Republic, Honduras, The Philippines,
Thailand, New Zealand, Tonga, Portugal, Holland, Hungry, Singapore,
Norway, The Ukraine, Japan, Italy, Slovakia, Moldavia and Lithonia.
According to official statistics, Iraq continues to be occupied by
168,349 foreign soldiers.
