Pinochet Dictatorship had 500 Torture Centers
SANTIAGO DE CHILE, July 31.— More than 500 torture centers operated
during the military dictatorship (1973-1990) of Gen. Augusto Pinochet,
Chilean Minister of National Property Romy Schmidt denounced Tuesday,
as reported by DPA news service.
Schmidt released a registry of public property used for repressive
purposes during the Pinochet regime, in which an estimated 3,000
Chileans were abducted and murdered and another 50,000 tortured.
Schmidt said the objective of the initiative is "to preserve a painful
part of our history."
Violations of human rights were the norm during the military
dictatorship. Today, hundreds of Chileans who were either civilian or
uniformed oppressors are either convicted or facing trials for crimes
against humanity.
General Pinochet was accused but was never convicted. He died on
September 10, 2006, paradoxically, International Human Rights Day.
