UN Expert Praises Cuban Experience in Dengue Control
Havana, August 7 (acn) Dr. Daniel Purcalla, sub-regional advisor of the
Pan American Health Organization and also of the World Health
Organization (WHO), said on Monday that Cuba has attained a vast and
successful experience in the control of dengue and its transmitting
vector.
During the inauguration of the 10th International Course on Dengue,
which takes place in the Cuban capital until next August 17th, Purcalla
praised the political will of the island's government to fight the
disease as well as the knowledge of the health personnel and the
support of the people, which have allowed Cuba to become a model of
reference for other countries.
Purcalla added that this has been recognized by the WHO through the
installation on the island of three Cooperating Centers for Viral
Diseases, Vectors and Dengue, which shows the prestige, dedication and
technical and scientific capacity of the Pedro Kouri Institute of
Tropical Medicine (IPK).
Speaking to ACN, the WHO advisor recognized the importance of these
courses that have taken place every other year for the last two
decades. On this occasion, some 200 students and professors from 25
countries will discuss and learn about significant aspects of this
disease transmitted by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito.
Also during the event, underway at the Havana-based IPK, renowned
specialists will analyze strategies to face dengue, considered by the
WHO as the second most important re-emerging tropical diseases and as
one of the most important viral diseases transmitted by arthropods.
