Abraham Lincoln Brigade Veteran Moe Fishman Dies at 92

New York, August 9 (RHC)-- Spanish Civil War veteran Moe Fishman has
died at the age of 92 in New York City. In the late 1930s, Moe joined
the Abraham Lincoln Brigade to fight in defense of Spain's
democratically elected government against a military coup led by
General Francisco Franco, backed by Adolf Hitler and Italian dictator
Benito Mussolini.

Returning home after fighting against fascism in Spain, Moe Fishman
joined the growing movement against U.S. imperialism and in favor of
peace and justice. He was a strong supporter of the Cuban Revolution
and visited us here at Radio Havana Cuba in 2001, when we interviewed
him for our English-language programming.

He told us then that if the United States and Britain had actively
fought fascism in 1937 and 1938 in Spain, Hitler could have been
stopped and there would have been no World War II. He said that the
International Brigade, of which the Abraham Lincoln Brigade was a part,
consisted of some 40,000 to 45,000 volunteers from fifty-two countries.
But Washington and London refused to help and 60 million were killed in
the Second World War.

After the war ended, Moe Fishman helped form the Veterans of Abraham
Lincoln Brigade and remained active in the struggle for a better world
until his death on Monday, August 6th.
