Peru President Faces Myriad Problems

Lima, Aug 13 (Prensa Latina) A new drop in his approval rating and
demands for ministerial changes, as well as problems with members of
his government confronted Peruvian President Alan Garcia on Monday.

A CPI poll verified that Garcia has only 34.3 percent acceptance
compared to 45.3 percent in May, with a marked difference between 40
percent disapproval in Lima and 67 percent in the interior.

The most critical regions are south of the Peruvian coast and east of
the Amazon, where Garcia has 80 percent disapproval.

Mauricio Mulder, secretary general of the Aprista Party (governing)
said he was confident the situation will be improved by the government.

The poll also verified that 59.2 percent of those questioned want
President Garcia to make substantial changes in his Cabinet,
particularly replacing Transport Minister Veronica Zabala and
Agriculture Minister Ismael Benavides, both involved in recent scandals.
