China Reacts to Mattel Allegations
Beijing, Aug 15 (Prensa Latina) In its first reaction since the US
multinational Mattel Corporation announced recall of nine million
Chinese-made toys, China declared on Wednesday that the toys comply
with agreed upon standards.
In an official note, China's State Administration for Quality
Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), recalled that some
years ago China adopted a strict inspection system to secure export
safety and quality.
In the case of toy making plants, since 80 percent of the
export-oriented production is sent to the United States, the firms
comply with US standards, the note declared.
The Mattel withdrawal is allegedly that the toys contain a high content
of lead, which if ingested by children could be harmful to their health.
The Chinese text announced the beginning of an investigation, asserting
that local authorities are in touch with the US Consumer Protection
Services Commission.
