A Warning Signal by Fidel Castro
By Angel Guerra Cabrera
Cubanow.- The United States will drag the world into unprecedented
chaos and destruction if not stopped on due time. Despite the obvious
and extremely dangerous nature of the facts, curiously there are no
public discussions on the issue except by just a few specialized or
alternative media entities.
Following the 11/S [9/11], the super-power set out on a prolonged cycle
of conquests with aggressions to Afghanistan and Irak, either through
“free” commerce or war, in order to maintain its hegemony by taking
over the world’s natural resources. And it’s not only about oil and
gas, it also extends to water, strategic minerals, and as it seems, to
an enormous territory in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia
devoted to the production of agro-fuels. In summary, it is a project to
re-colonize the planet by one sole power and its acolyte by
implementing an international order mainly based on the use – or
threat- of force, a matter that had been decided many years ago in the
neoliberal /neocon intelligent tanks. The estrange sabotage against the
Twin Towers and its manipulation by the media machinery provided the
optimum conditions for its unfolding.
Contrary to what many believe, the European Union has shown lack of
political will in putting a stop to it. With the early French-German
condemnation of intervention in Irak faded away any other attempt of
resistance in the “old” Europe against Washington’s aggressive policy.
In addition, the elections of Angela Merckel in Germany and Nicolas
Sarkozy in France have significantly strengthened the pre-existing
subordination of these two nations to the United States. It was
something likely to happen since once the occupation of Mesopotamia was
terminated, it was blessed in the UN Security Council with the approval
of the fading Chirac and the weakening Schroeder. True that the defeat
in Irak and the stagnating situation in Afganistan, along with genocide
practices, serious human rights violations and assault of civil
liberties in the US as well as in Europe, have undermined Washington’s
credibility significantly. A credibility pierced even more by the
highly uncertain immediate future of a dollar-tied international
financial system. Paradoxically, far from reducing the involvement of
the western political elite, it increased it.
However, the international course the United States has followed is
inevitably leading the nation to collide with Russia- as seen in the
anti-missile shield, Iran and Kosovo- with China, and most probably,
with India, both nuclear powers boasting an increasing independence and
world protagonism, and obviously with all the States that look forward
to autonomous development in Latin America. The conditions suitable for
the eruption of new and devastating war conflicts, even with atomic
weapons, are being set up at forced pace. This situation was aggravated
upon George W. Bush’s decision to include this type of means in the
panoply of the so-called preventive war and in every step he takes in
foreign policy. The last of these steps is the weaponry mega-contract
signed with Arab reactionary regimes, representing an open provocation
to Iran.
The first great warning signal of that highly critical threat was
announced by Fidel Castro in his article “Reflection on hard and
evident realities” (www.jornada.unam.mx/reflexiones/), an incisive
analysis of General Leonid Ivashov, former head of the Russian Armed
Forces. Fidel,- a friend of mine wrote from Buenos Aires- scored a goal
from a mid-field distance for world peace by bringing up an issue that
is the talk of (some) defense ministries and that hardly no one dares
to even mention.
In my opinion, I do not see any favorable shift possible for today’s
situation, no matter how the 2008 elections may unfold in the troubled
and brutal North. If the US people anti-warlike conscience grow- as
shown by mid-term elections and recent interviews- the pre-candidate
with possibilities to reach the White House do not even notice it. Not
one has opposed substantially the policy of obtaining military
superiority at any price; or implementing preventive war; or harassing
Iran “with all options placed on the table”, and obviously, avoid
touching even with a rose petal the fire-raising war criminals that are
ruling in Israel.
