World Peace Council Preps Congress

Caracas, Aug 28 (Prensa Latina) The World Peace Council began
preparations for its next congress to be held on April 2008 in Caracas.

Cuban Orlando Fundora, president of the organization, told a press
conference about the importance of strengthening efforts in favor of
peace while warning that it can only be achieved with a defeat of
poverty and destitution.

"There can be no peace when 20 percent of the world population lives in
opulence and 80 percent suffer hunger," said Fundora and added that the
United States has the main responsibility for this situation.

Fundora explained that Venezuela was chosen to headquarter the congress
because of its example of solidarity and dignity.

"Venezuela and its revolution are offering land to people who want to
work it, and have boosted integration of our nations and the social
missions that help our Latin American people and brothers," he added.

He said these initiatives can achieve peace and say no to war and
violations of countries like "what is being done by the empire."

He added that it is a non-aligned, pluralist, democratic and
independent social movement in favor of safe peace and justice for all
the peoples and an open space for dialogue, cooperation and integration
to achieve sovereignty.

The Secretary General of the Venezuelan International Solidarity
Committee, Andean deputy, Yul Jabour, told Prensa Latina that the first
coordination meeting will move to advance some issues of peace policies
at a regional level.
