Macri: Chávez' proposed changes to the Constitution violate Mercosur
The incoming Mayor of Buenos Aires, Mauricio Macri, accused Venezuelan
President Hugo Chávez of "violating the democratic clause of the Common
Market of the South (Mercosur)" with his draft changes to the
Venezuelan Constitution.
During a meeting Wednesday with president and vice-president of the
Association of Venezuelan Mayors (Adave), Saady Bijani and Leopoldo
López, respectively, in Argentina, Macri suggested taking the issue to
the upcoming meeting of the Centrist Democrat International (CDI) in
Rome late this month, DPA reported.
Macri hinted that during the meeting in Italy "the members are likely
to endorse a motion of institucional support for democratic parties in
Venezuela," according to Macri's Propuesta República party (PRO).
Chávez' proposed changes include indefinite presidential reelection,
extension of the presidential term from six to seven years and a
questioned regulation on decentralization and autonomy of municipal and
local powers.
