Chile to extradite Alberto Fujimori to Peru to face charges

By Ben Martin

Alberto Fujimori, the former Peruvian president, will be extradited to
Peru after the supreme court in Chile ruled that there was enough
evidence to try him on corruption and human rights charges.

Mr Fujimori is accused of ordering death squads to kill at least 25
people. He is also accused of phone tapping, involvement in payoffs to
lawmakers and misusing #7.5 million in government funds.

Prosecutors in Lima said they would request a sentence of up to 30
years if he were convicted.

Gabriel Zaliasnik, Mr Fujimori's Chilean lawyer, said yesterday that Mr
Fujimori accepted the court's decision. "We are not planning to seek any
delays or attempt any kind of manoeuvres," he said.

In 2000, Mr Fujimori resigned the presidency by fax, beginning five
years in self-imposed exile.

In Nov 2005 he planned to mount a bid from Chile to resume power in
Peru. Chilean authorities immediately arrested him and the long
extradition procedure began.

Mr Fujimori still enjoys the support of some Peruvians who remember him
for defeating guerrilla groups.

The US-based Human Rights Watch said it was the first time a court
anywhere in the world had ordered the extradition of a former leader to
be tried in his home country for human rights violations.
