Trade Unionists Condemn US Blockade against Cuba
Havana, Sept 25 (acn) A declaration condemning the almost 50-year-old
US financial, commercial and economic blockade against Cuba was
approved in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, by trade union
representatives from 22 Latin American countries, Spain and Portugal
during the Iberoamerican Trade Union Summit, held in that city on
September 17-21.
The document will be presented to the Iberoamerican heads of state and
government when they meet for their summit in Santiago de Chile on
November 8-10 under the slogan 'Social Cohesion and the Development of
Social Policies to Achieve More Inclusive Societies in Iberoamerica'.
Participants in the Trade Union Summit noted that they have witnessed
how free trade agreement treaties and treaties for the protection of
investments with the United States have become new productive platforms
that only benefit large multinationals.
They stressed that only through the promotion of an authentic social
dialogue will the agreements reached at Iberoamerican Summits of Heads
of State and Governments be implemented.
The Declaration of Cartagena de Indias supports regional and
sub-regional integration processes, the creation of open institutions
with a real participation of society and an effective decision-making
process that represents the needs and aspirations of the peoples,
democracy, freedom, social justice and peace.
