Lula Proposes another Earth Summit

United Nations, Sep 25 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio
Lula da Silva proposed to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday that it
hold a second Earth Summit, 20 years after that organized in Rio de
Janeiro.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 62nd UN session, the president
urged that measures be adopted to stop environmental deterioration.

At the opening meeting, the most important every year at the UN, Lula
proposed a world conference on environment in Brazil in 2012, to review
what has happened in two decades.

He insisted on the importance of learning what has happened regarding
environmental protection and establishment of a new direction, and
announced that the meeting would be called Rio Conference plus 20

The Brazilian head of State asserted that his country will not abdicate
its sovereignty or responsibilities in Amazonia, under any
circumstances, and called the climate change issue extremely serious.
