Cuba Promotes Projects to Protect the Ozone Layer

Havana, Sept 26 (acn)The technological restructuring of a plant to
produce pharmaceutical aerosols for asthmatic people is one of the
Cuban projects to eliminate ozone depleting substances.

Speaking to ACN, MSc Daniel Peru Rivera, a specialist at the Ozone
Technical Office in Havana, announced that the plant will now produce
these aerosols without damaging the ozone layer as it will not use any
kind of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), an ozone depleting substance.

Rivera noted that the plant, which will be fully operational early in
2008, is part of the island's projects in favor of the environment that
have the support of some agencies of the United Nations, including the
UN Developing Program (UNDP).

During a meeting with representatives from some of these institutions,
Cuban specialists presented other projects such as the elimination of
the methyl bromide in the growing of coffee and also in other products
in 2008.

As of December 2006, Cuba had reduced to 77% the consumption of
chlorofluorocarbons.
