Alarcon on Nomination Process for Municipal Delegates:
"In Cuba, the eople do the Nominating

Havana, Sept 27 (acn) The president of the Cuban Parliament, Ricardo
Alarcon, said on Wednesday that everyone on the island is represented
by each of the thousands of people democratically nominated across the
nation as candidates to become members of the municipal assemblies.

Speaking during the Round Table daily radio and television program, the
top legislator analyzed and gave details of the electoral process that
is underway on the island.

Alarcon recalled that, in Cuba, people choose their candidates and
elect them by ballot while the votes are counted publicly.

He added that the nominees are not chosen depending on how much money
they have but based on their merits and principles. He also stressed
importance of the role of delegates to the municipal assemblies in the
struggle of the Cuban people to develop and preserve their ideals.

For her part, the president of the National Electoral Commission, Maria
Esther Reud, said that more than seven million electors participated in
the nomination of candidates for delegates to municipal assemblies and
noted that the number of candidates elected was 37,328.
