Committee in Solidarity with the Cuban Five Created in Italy
Havana, Sept 27 (acn) The creation of an new Italian committee in
solidarity with the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters unjustly held in
US prisons was covered at a press conference held at the Italian
Parliament in Rome.
The committee is made of Italian politicians including senators Jose
Luis del Roio and Haidi Giuliani, from the Communist Refoundation
Party, and senator Manuela Palermi, from the Italian Communist Party,
reports Granma online newspaper.
Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labanino, Rene Gonzalez and
Gerardo Hernandez, internationally known as the Cuban Five, were
detained in 1998 for trying to prevent terrorist actions organized by
right-wing anti-Cuba organizations based in Florida.
The Five were charged with espionage and punished with extremely harsh
sentences despite the antiterrorist nature of their mission.
Franco Forconi, coordinator of the new committee and of the Cuba-Italy
Friendship Association in the region of Lazio, noted that the group's
main objective is fighting against the disinformation of the mainstream
media on the case.
Forconi noted that the committee, along with other Italian
organizations in solidarity with Cuba, aims to support the new global
campaign undertaken to demand the freedom of the Five.
At the press conference, the Italian activists denounced that the US
government had once again denied visas to Olga Salanueva and Adriana
Perez, who are not allowed to enter the US to visit their husbands Rene
Gonzalez and Gerardo Hernandez, respectively.
