US Political Manipulation Makes Headlines

Washington, Oct 24 (Prensa Latina) The influential New York Times urged
the Bush administration on Wednesday to clarify the murky scheming
within the Justice Department.

"The US people have the right to know what happened in the last six
years," the daily said.

The NYT pointed to the refusal by current and former government
officials, such as Karl Rove and Harriet Miers, to declare to Congress
what they knew in relation to the political manipulation of justice.

"They should testify and the Justice Department should present to the
Senate Judicial Committee the documents required by that authority
months ago," the newspaper said.

Each look at the scandal around ex Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez
brings more evidence of the Justice Department politicization to light,
to the point that it seemed an arm of the National Republican
Committee, the daily averred.

Univ. of Missouri Prof. Donald Shields testified before a congressional
committee that the Attorney General's office prosecuted an average of
5.6 Democrat officials for one Republican.

According to the expert, the possibility that this disparity occurs by
chance is less than one in 10,000.
