Colombian Govt: FARC Leader Killed

Bogota, Oct 25(Prensa Latina) Colombian guerrilla leader Gustavo Rueda
Diaz, known as Martin Caballero, was killed in combat with Army special
forces, Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos informed on Thursday.

Santos added that another 19 members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces
of Colombia (FARC) were killed in an operation in Montes de Maria, in
northern Bolivar department.

He explained that the military action was carried out by air and earth
after a "careful infiltration work" of the insurgent organization led
by Martin Caballero, who was considered the FARC's 37th front commander.

He said that the government will pay about $800 for the information
leading to Caballero's whereabouts.

While these actions occurred in the country's north, FARC insurgents
made six energy towers collapse with explosives, leaving about 150,000
people without electricity in 39 municipalities in Huila and Caqueta
departments.

In the capital, authorities said to have captured six alleged members
of FARC, including four men and two women, who were supposedly trying
to carry out an assassination attempt on President Alvaro Uribe and his
Defense minister.

According to the Attorney General's Office, the six people, who
allegedly belonged to an urban FARC network named Antonio Narino, were
also planning attacks against several shopping centers and the
headquarters of the RCN TV channel before regional elections scheduled
for Sunday, October 28.
