Dengue Fever Hits Honduras

Tegucigalpa, Oct 29 (Prensa Latina) More than 25,000 Hondurans have
been infected with the dengue virus and some 1,500 patients have
suffered from the dangerous hemorrhagic variant, local health
authorities said on Sunday.

According to a report from the Ministry of Public Health, the disease,
transmitted by the Aedes aegyptis mosquito, has killed 13 Hondurans.

However, Honduran Health General Director Angel Vazquez noted that the
incidence of the disease is decreasing.

Over the past week, the number of cases has dropped by 26 percent, the
official pointed out.

The war against dengue fever has cost the State some two million
dollars, La Prensa reported.

The money, noted the newspaper, has been spent in cleaning operations,
the elimination of breeding grounds for mosquitoes and fumigation,
among other actions.
