Cristina Fernandez, First Woman Elected President in Argentina

Havana, Oct 29 (acn) After garnering 43,5 percent of the votes at
Sunday's presidential elections, Argentinean Cristina Fernandez became
the first woman to have been elected President of the South American
nation.

Fernandez will assume office amidst a favourable economic recovery
boosted by outgoing President Nestor Kirchner over the past four years.
"I feel, I have a double responsibility, as president and as a woman,"
said Cristina after learning that preliminary vote counting revealed
her victory.

Cristina Fernandez, who is Kirchner's wife, issued a call for unity,
and invited all social sectors to build a better nation. She said that
she wants to develop a joint social project which includes all sectors
of Argentinean society, disregarding political differences. "I want all
to join in to build the future, because we have advanced a lot since
2003 in our struggle against poverty and unemployment, and I want to
call on you all without hard feelings or hatred," she stressed.

Cristina, as the president-elect is called by Argentineans, has an
outstanding political record that dates back to 1970. She graduated as
Bachelor from the Faculty of Juridical and Social Sciences at the local
university of Buenos Aires.

Fernandez was elected provincial legislator at the Chamber of Deputies
in the locality of Santa Cruz in 1989; she was re-elected to the post
in 1993.

Six years later, she was elected senator for Santa Cruz, and re-elected
in 2001. In 2005, she was elected senator for Buenos Aires.
