Another Blow to Bush for Blockading Cuba
By Angel Rodríguez Alvarez
AIN Special Service
On Tuesday the UN General Assembly will discuss and vote, for the 16th
consecutive time, on a resolution regarding Washington's economic
blockade against Cuba.
Over the last 15 years, starting in 1992 when Cuba first presented a
draft resolution demanding an end to the genocidal policy, the
international community has gradually increased its condemnation of the
irrational and criminal practice. The 2006 vote could not have been
more stunning as 183 nations voted in favor of the Cuban resolution
demanding an end to the US attempts to strangle the island
economically, representing 95 per cent of the world body's member
nations. After the White House's closest allies were among those that
voted against Washington's anti-Cuba policy, never before has the
powerful empire been so isolated.
The crushing condemnation refutes Washington's idea that this is a
bilateral issue. The US economic war against the island includes
extraterritorial clauses which affect third nations doing business with
Cuba. The US conduct, which violates international law, ratifies the
traditional opposition Washington has had against the United Nations
each time the world body makes decisions not to the liking of the White
House.
For any sensible government, unlike the US which is ruled by arrogance
and hate and committed to right wing sectors in Miami, the results of
the UN vote would be more than enough to change its policy.
