Turkish Economic Sanctions on Iraq 

Ankara, Oct 29 (Prensa Latina) Turkey has imposed economic sanctions on
Iraq for allowing the presence of rebels from the Kurdistan Workers
Party in its northern territory, reported the media in this capital on
Monday. 

The president of the Turkey-Iraq Economic Relations Council, Ercument
Aksov, told Referans daily that restrictions include suspension of
flights between Turkey and Erbil, capital of the autonomous Iraqi
Kurdistan, as well as the closure of Harbur crossing, through which
2,500 trucks circulate daily. 

He also said that the imposition of sanctions was agreed five days ago
during the last meeting of the Council, formed by the cabinet, the
Turkish president and the top military command. 

Meanwhile, Cumhurivet daily reported that it was ordered to prepare
conditions to open the Syrian-Tuskish crossing, in Sanljurfa province,
in the coming days, to avoid the entry to Iraq through the north. 

Turkey has amassed 100,000 troops, backed by tanks, artillery,
warplanes and combat helicopters, along the Iraqi border in readiness
for a possible large-scale incursion to crush PKK guerrillas.
