Sri Lanka still Fighting Tamil Rebels

Colombo, Oct 29 (Prensa Latina) On Monday, Sri Lanka's Army continued
its offensive against separatist Tamil rebels in the northern territory
of the island, where major clashes are taking place, reported the
Defense Ministry

According to a release in Colombo the last combat took place in Jaffna
and Mannar districts, killing 20 members of the Tigers for the Tamil
Eelam Liberation and wounding 2 soldiers.

The battles were concentrated in Nagarkovil, Muhamale, Murukkankulam,
the coastal region of Mullanavai and Thampane, close to Wanni wooded
forest, TLTE headquarters.

Since 24 years ago the rebels are fighting for the autonomy of northern
Sri Lanka, an island at the south of Asia of 21 million of inhabitants
where 75 percent of the population is of Singhalese origin and only 18
percent Tamil.

Since July 1983 bloody clashes have killed 75 thousand civilians and
soldiers, and four thousand victims have been registered in 2006 only.
