Bolivian Church Urged to Give Up Accused Pedophile Priest

La Paz, Nov 16 (Prensa Latina) Bolivian District Attorney Cesar
Cartagena accused the Archbishopric of Cochabamba Friday of hiding
fugitive priest Jose Santana, accused of sexually abusing 30 children.

Cartagena denied any supposed ecclesiastical cooperation, because the
Church knew about the incident and removed the pederast from his
position, instead of denouncing him to the authorities.

"They are hiding him. If they (Church officials) wanted to collaborate
and work with correction they would bring him to the authorities",
Cartagena denounced.

Msgr. Tito Solari, Archbishop of Cochabamba, testified yesterday before
the district attorneys and justified his initial measure regarding
Santana, alleging absence of evidence.

However, Episcopal delegate Eugenio Coter later admitted that the
Church tried to solve the matter internally to avoid an institutional
trial.
