Bones of Giant Prehistoric Crocodile Found in Cuba
Havana, Nov 20 (acn) The bones of a giant predatory crocodile that
inhabited the earth during the Miocene Age were found in the Cayajana
river, in the central Cuban province of Sancti Spiritus.
The bones corresponding to a 10-meter long crocodile that lived
sometime between 23 and 5 million years ago were found on the river
bank of the Cayajana, eroded by the waters of the Zaza reservoir,
alongside bones of marine mammals such as dugongs, ancestors of the
elephants.
The discovery was made by the Cuban Speleological Society's Group Sama.
In statements published in Escambray digital newspaper, the team leader
Alejandro Romero Emperador said the samples are currently under study
at the Instituto de Ecologia y Sistematica, of the Ministry of Science,
Technology and Environment.
The remains of these pre-historic animals will be exhibited at the
Museo de Naturaleza y el Hombre of Sancti Spiritus in December.
Other large fossils remain unidentified at the site of the discovery
awaiting further excavation and research.
