Bolivarian students take Caracas
by Juan Antonio Borrego & Calixto N. Llanes
CARACAS.— As a show of support for constitutional reform and President
Hugo Chávez, tens of thousands of university students, supporters of
the revolutionary process, took to the streets Wednesday and marched to
Miraflores Palace in what has been described as one of the largest
demonstrations of youth to take place during the Bolivarian era.
Coming from all 24 states, university students began gathering in the
early hours of the morning in Venezuela Plaza in the heart of Caracas
and from there marched to Miraflores Palace where President Hugo Chávez
appeared, immediately after his return from a successful international
tour.
“You are the revolution’s most powerful fuel,” he said to the student
demonstrators who had waited hours for him, later adding, “I’ll see you
here on December 2 to celebrate the ‘Yes’ victory.”
Nevertheless, the game will not be won until the last out, he said and
emphasized the importance of continuing to work tirelessly, mobilizing
all the revolutionary forces in support of constitutional reform and
remaining alert to all the oligarchy’s maneuvers, attempts at
destabilization and confusion.
Most favorably received among Bolivarian students as evidence of the
deepening of the revolution are Articles 64 – which establishes the
right to vote at the age of 16 – and 109, which recognizes the
participation of students in the People’s Power assemblies and opens
the way to the democratization of the universities.
