CIA Interrogated Prisoners in Jordan
Washington, Dec 1 (Prensa Latina) The US Central Intelligence Agency
interrogated at least 12 alleged terrorists in Jordan with the
complicity of the government in that country, The Washington Post daily
revealed on Saturday.
Since 2000, the CIA set up a clandestine detention center on the
outskirts of Amman, where at least a dozen people were interrogated,
says the daily, quoting documents, ex-prisoners and human rights
defenders.
The facility was used mostly as a transit point for prisoners captured
by the CIA in other countries, who were later sent to places like the
US Naval Base in Guantanamo, eastern Cuba, the daily adds.
The Post noted that others were arrested in Jordan, including two
persons detained during stops at Amman international airport.
It comments on the case of a microbiology student, who was captured in
Pakistan in 2001 and transferred to the Jordanian capital; his fate is
still unknown.
The daily also refers to Palestinian Marwan al Jabur, who was released
after being held in the facility.
He considers that the General Intelligence Department of Jordan is
possibly the closest ally of the CIA in the Arab world.
GID has received funds, training and equipment from the CIA for
decades, notes the Post.
In the wake of the 9/11 attacks, US authorities started "rendering"
alleged terrorists to other nations where torture methods were not
banned, the daily concludes.
