A very strong report out of the Commons Defence Select Committee on the
true state of the Basra British troops left behind. It almost certainly
adds up to the most damning assessment of the failure of the results of
the British war effort in southern Iraq. Alex Thompson is on the case
together with an account of the appalling difficulties British
translators in Iraq are having in securing safe passage to Britain.

A group of MPs has questioned whether Britain's aim of establishing
security in Basra has been left unfulfilled.

A Defence Select Committee report paints a bleak picture of a city
under the grip of militias with a police force that can't always be
trusted.
