Cuba Honors Anniversary of the Revolutionary Armed Forces
Cubans celebrate the 51st foundation anniversary of the Revolutionary
Armed Forces (FAR) on Sunday, with several actions nationwide.
The arrival of the Granma Yacht on December 2, 1956 to Cuban shores,
marked the emergence of an institution that first defeated the
Fulgencio Batista dictatorship (1952-1958), and currently guarantees
the Island s achievements.
At the time, 82 men lead by now President Fidel Castro arrived from
Mexico to continue the last stage of the Cuban liberation war, started
on July 26, 1953 with the attacks on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de
Cespedes garrisons.
Early today, the same number of young people from the Niquero
municipality in Granma made a symbolic representation of the yacht s
arrival 51 years ago.
Also to mark the day, a cultural act was held Saturday at the Portada
de la Libertad monument, the exact place where the yacht landed.
The first secretary of the Young Communist League (UJC) in the
territory, Manuel Valera, read a message expressing the commitment of
the new generations with the Cuban social project, and encouraging
youth fighters in other parts of the world, according to Juventud
Rebelde daily.
"Though they knew the enemy was superior in arms and men, they did not
give up, and created a precedent that FAR members will never forget,"
said Sulenys Suarez, student from the Jose Marti Military technical
Institute, the source added.
