Bolivia's Evo Morales Calls for Referendum on His Presidency
Havana, December 6 (acn) Bolivian President Evo Morales proposed on
Wednesday a nationwide referendum on his presidency and the mandates of
the governors of the country's nine departments, the majority of which
are part of the opposition, reported Granma Newspaper.
"The people will say who is going and who's staying to guarantee this
process of change," said Evo while addressing the nation from La Paz.
The president said he would send the proposed bill to the national
Congress on Thursday asking the legislature to call for the vote. "If
the people say 'Evo must go,' I've got no problem. I'm democratic," he
further noticed. The governors of Santa Cruz, Tarija, Beni and
Cochabamba, all oppossed to the Morales government, reject any type of
national dialogue and traveled recently to the United States to
denounce what they call "illegal" actions by Morales and his party in
Bolivia's Constituent Assembly and the Congress.
"These governors travelled to the United States to complain about the
mass dictatorship and filled their mouths with democracy while their
followers in Bolivia assault public offices, silence critical media and
impose a regime of terror comparable to the military dictatorships of
the 1980s in Santa Cruz," said the Minister of the Presidency in
Bolivia Juan Ramon Quintana.
