Cuba Reiterates Danger of Production of Biofuels

Havana, Dec 6 (acn) - Cuba has reiterated a warning about the dangers 
and conflicts that the unbalanced and excessive production of biofuels 
would generate for humanity.

On this occasion, the warning was launched by Ramon Pich Madruga, 
deputy director of the Cuban Center of Researches on World Economy 
(CIEM) during a conference of the UN Commission for Trade and 
Development (UNCTAD) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

During the meeting, several topics were discussed including those that 
will be taken to a UNCTAD meeting that will take place in Accra, the 
capital of Ghana.

According to Prensa Latina news agency, the Cuban representative 
stressed the need to approach the issue of biofuels with an adequate 
balance and criticized a report that overestimates the advantages of 
biofuel production and ignores the challenges it introduces.

"Much is said about the opportunities given by biofuels if they are 
used in a balanced way but the text says nothing about the conflicts 
that would emerge if it is not done in that manner," Pich Madruga noted.

He added that massive production of biofuels is negative if factors 
such as the health of ecosystems, water resources and biodiversity are 
not taken into account.
