December: A Month with a Long History of Terrorist Activities

By Roberto Perez Betancourt

The history of terrorism committed against Cuba in the month of
December, since the 1959 triumph of the revolution, shows that
criminals backed by successive US administrations and the CIA do not
choose to rest during this month full of festivities and relaxation.
The Press Information Center released a new report listing the more
than 80 terrorist attempts committed during the last month of the year
that run from cold blooded assassinations to sabotages of all types.

The methods are different: underground infiltrations of mercenaries
with plans to sabotage and assassinate, placing bombs (among the
favourites), fires, kidnappings, shootings, maritime piracy, and armed
assaults, among others. The perpetrators are part of anti-Cuban
organizations directly trained and financed by the CIA or other
entities that serve to veil actions ordered by the US government. It is
amazing that ten successive US administrations have used hundreds of
millions of US taxpayers' dollars to pay for Washington?s dirty war
against Cuba, maintain survile mercenaries and blackmail, all to no
avail. Although loss of human lives and material losses provoked by
such crimes are tragic and costly.

The list of terrorist actions against the island during the month of
December is long. Just to mention a few during the 1990s shows that
terrorism against Cuba actively continues by assassins living
unbothered in southern Florida under the protection of the White House.
A good example is Luis Posada Carriles, characterized as a dangerous
terrorist by the Bush administration itself, which, far from
extraditing him to Venezuela to face charges in compliance of
international treaties, protect the terrorist called the Bin Laden of
Latin America. Here are some more examples of terrorism against Cuba in
December. On December 26, 1990 an agricultural AN 2 plane was hyjacked
in eastern Las Tunas and taken to the illegally occupied US Naval Base
in Guantanamo. The cost of this act was 7,320 pesos. On December 28,
1993 two planes belonging to HAR organization violated Cuban airspace.
Three terrorists from Miami infiltrated the area of Matanzas province
on December 29, 1991. Weapons and other war materials were
confiscated. According to reports, these terrorist had received
training in a camp located on 168th Street in Miami where some 60 other
people also received training.

On December 21, 1977, the Omega 7 organization carried out four
sabotage actions with bombs in Miami and New Jersey, aimed at hurting
Cuban emigrants and damaging travel agencies that did business with the
island. On December 23, 1962, terrorists assassinated a farmer and
wounded his brother in the eastern province of Sancti Spiritus and also
set fire to a local store. Still in the memory of the Cuban people is
the sabotage in the La Epoca department store in downtown Havana on
December 31, 1960. A fire was set by the terrorist organization
Movimiento 30 de Noviembre and raged for 22 hours, injuring 34 people
and causing material damages estimated at more than 10 million pesos.
This is only a few examples of the blood and grief caused by a group of
crazy people and organizations that do not rest in their obsession to
destroy the sovereignty of the Cuban people, who will soon celebrate
the 49th anniversary of their definitive independence.
