Bolivia to Hold Confidence Vote
La Paz, Dec 6 (Prensa Latina) Bolivian President Evo Morales plans to
present a bill in Congress Thursday to put his performance and mandate
of the nine opposition mayors before the people for approval.
Morales' unexpected call for a referendum ratifies the democratic
character of his management, and corroborates that opposition
accusations of authoritarianism are illegitimate.
The Bolivian president last night challenged top departmental
authorities to be consistent, and submit to the will of the people, who
will have the last word over the social changes.
ó Do not be afraid of the people, ó Morales affirmed, challenging
conservative parties to defend their stances with democracy, instead of
deceiving the Bolivian people.
Morales denounced the opposition is afraid of the referendum, and tries
to sabotage the writing of a new Constitution, faced with a possible
loss of historic privileges achieved during the dictatorship and
neoliberal governments.
He stressed he does not intend to remain in power indefinitely, as the
real responsibility of elected authorities is reduce individual and
regional differences as much as possible.
Morales' proposal caused an immediate reaction among his adversaries,
many of whom decided to get acquainted with the content of the bill
before making a statement.
