A New Perspective on Che: the Human not the Icon
Havana, Dec 7 (acn) The documentary "Ernesto Guevara," by Argentine
filmmaker Tristan Bauer, shows a new and more human perspective of the
legendary guerrilla fighter Ernesto Che Guevara forty years after his
murder in Bolivia, when his image travels the world on clothing and a
variety of other products that make him seem like an icon.
The documentary, which is already in the post-production stage, was
announced by Bauer during a press conference at the Festival of the New
Latin American Cinema, underway in Havana. The work offers a "new look"
at the human side of the mythical Argentinean Cuban guerrilla fighter.
It is a new approach from the inside, said Bauer, who is a member of
the jury of the Official Section of the contest.
The director of "Enlightened by Fire" spent nearly 12 years gathering
information for his project. The work includes several unpublished
video and audio recordings provided by the Cuban government and by
Che's widow, Aleida March.
"It was Aleida who inspired this project", said Bauer. She encouraged
the idea of telling the story of the other Che, beyond his own youthful
writings, the notebooks of the Sierra Maestra guerilla period in Cuba,
and his diary in Bolivia. It is a more intimate approach to his
relationship with his family and other aspects of his life as a
human being.
"His passion for poetry is apparent in all his writings, in the
farewell tape he left for his wife, " the director explained. Che was
the model of a fine man, a way of thinking cut off abruptly.
The debut of this Argentine-Cuban-Spanish co-production is scheduled
in four months, and it will be screened in several countries in the
Americas, said Bauer.
