Cultural Program Takes Arts to Cuban Penitentiaries

Havana, Jan 3 (acn) As part of a cultural promotion project, inmates in
several Cuban penitentiaries will enjoy varied cultural presentations
from January 13 to 28, which include literature, music and visual arts.

The project, begun at the initiative of singer-songwriter Silvio
Rodriguez, will start with a concert at a penitentiary known as
"Boniato," in eastern Santiago de Cuba province.

Participation will include renowned troubadours Vicente Feliu and
Amaury Perez, Havana historian Eusebio Leal, filmmaker Lester Hamlet
and visual artist Ernesto Rancaño.

The cultural project will also be implemented in the provinces of
Guantanamo, Granma, Holguin, Las Tunas, Camaguey, Ciego de Avila and
Villa Clara, as well as penitentiaries in the Isle of Youth, south of
Havana, next March.

Cultural programs for penitentiaries in Cuba were first undertaken
between 1990 and 1991 in different centers located in the western
section of the island, but their expansion was delayed by limitations
imposed by the economic slump Cuba in that decade.

The project aims at contributing to the full social integration of
inmates through cultural programs.
