Elections in Pakistan Put Off Six Weeks

Havana, Jan 3 (acn) Pakistan's elections were put off six weeks until
February 18, due to the unrest that followed the assassination of
former prime minister and opposition leader Benazir Bhutto on December
27, announced authorities in the capital Islamabad.

Meanwhile, Granma newspaper reports that President Pervez Musharraf has
requested help from Britain's Scotland Yard to investigate the killing
of Bhutto. Musharraf made a call for reconciliation stating that
"Benazir Bhutto died at the hands of terrorists."

Opposition political parties including the Pakistan Peoples Party of
Bhutto rejected the postponement of the elections, but announced they
would participate.

The death of the former prime minister led to three days of nationwide
unrest, resulting in 58 deaths and tens of millions of US dollars in
damages. The province of Sind has been the most affected.
