UN Aid to Kenya Keeps Flowing

United Nations, Jan 7 (Prensa Latina) UN agencies have continued to
support Kenya's Red Cross to assist the victims of violence in that
country, where 350 people have been killed and 250,000 have been
displaced.

The situation remains calm but tense, UN officials in that African
country said, according to reports circulating here.

Kenya's capital, Nairobi, seems to have returned to normality, the UN
sources said, but many displaced people fear for their safety and
remain in the places where they found shelter.

UN Coordinator in Kenya Elizabeth Lwanga said the main job is to meet
the special needs of the displaced people and others affected by the
crisis.

On Friday, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called on President Mwai
Kibaki and his opponent, Raila Odinga, separately to solve the
situation immediately and peacefully, and insisted on the humanitarian
needs of the victims of violence.

Ban has also been in touch with Ghana's President, John Kofour, who
currently heads the African Union, according to spokeswoman Michele
Montas.

Violence broke out last weekend, when it was announced that President
Kibaki had been reelected in the December 27 elections, and opposition
leader Odinga objected that decision.

Estimates from the United Nations for Coordination of Humanitarian Aid
show that 500,000 people have been affected by the ongoing crisis in
Kenya, and some 5,400 fled to neighboring Uganda.

A group of UN human rights experts expressed concern at the incitement
of tribal hatred in Kenya and frictions between ethnic groups.

They particularly referred to the deaths of 30 Kikuyo people, including
women and children, of the Kikuyo ethnic group to which President
Kibaki belongs, who were burned alive in a church by a Lou crowd,
Odinga's tribe.
